Do you know how to backup your digital information?

Category : Blog

FacebooktwitterlinkedinFacebooktwitterlinkedin

By: Eyal Gallico, owner of TopMac

So, why is backup of your digital information so important? And should you backup your “stuff”?

1st rule of fight club:          You need a backup!

2nd rule of fight club:         You need a backup!

3rd rule of fight club:          Haven’t you backed up yet?

These days as more and more of our life are in digital form (when was the last time you exposed a film?), we need to keep some of our stuff backed up, because we can’t afford to lose it.

It may be photos, files or anything that has any meaning to you, and that if you lose it you know you are in a serious pickle.

It doesn’t really matter if you use Windows or a Mac computer, there are few ways to backup your data.

Local Backup – Local backup as the name implies, is a local backup usually via an external drive. You plug the drive to your computer and copy the files you need, Or create a clone of your drive with a dedicated software.

Off-site Backup – meaning you take your backup someplace else except your home or  office.

Cloud Backup – means you backup to the cloud via a cloud provider (also referred to as off-site backup).

What is the best way to backup?

There is no right or wrong answer; it depends on what you need to backup, and how fast you need it in case of recovery.

My 5-cent advice to you is have at least 3 copies/backup.

Let me explain myself: Case I had with one of my clients, who has a design studio with several iMacs and backup drives attached to every Mac. One night his studio was burglarized, and all his iMacs and the drives connected to them were stolen.

So he had a backup, right?  Wrong… The thieves have his machines AND the backup. So in this case his backup strategy was flawed.

More on how to backup your data in Part 2 of my article… so stay tuned.

BTW- Dropbox is NOT a backup solution—It’s a synchronizing solution.

3 Ways To Continue the Celebration After Graduation

FacebooktwitterlinkedinFacebooktwitterlinkedin

By:  Rachel Lupercio, LMFTA, Excelerated Living

#1.  Bask in the achievement of your accomplishment and what it took to get there.  So many times we celebrate our graduation without really taking in what just happened.  Sure we are finished with going to a set of classes and studying for hours on end so now we can sit down and watch a Game of Thrones, Scandal, The Big Bang Theory or some other entertaining show for the sheer pleasure of it and without guilt that we should be studying. (Now that’s life isn’t it?)   But let’s back up for a minute, you have pursued and pushed through to the end and you have the diploma to prove it.  Diploma in hand is the result of your time and energy well spent.  Through thick and thin, perhaps long nights of parties and short nights of sleep.  You pulled “all nighters” of study, it has been your focus for years and now it is done.  So let us consider the qualities that it took you to get that diploma in your hot little hands.  Your qualities such as persistence, active listening, self-discipline, follow through, prioritizing just to name a few.  Consider building on this list as you think about what it took you to obtain your degree.  Truly take a moment to bask and meditate on your qualities.  These qualities do not get put on the shelf or hang on the wall, these qualities are going to take you into your future, they are a part of who you are and what you have developed and honed in on as a result of pursuing your degree. Celebrate your qualities.

#2.  Begin to create what you want your life to look like by being intentional with what you do with your time.  With the understanding that time is one of the greatest gifts after graduation it gives you the opportunity to make conscious decisions on what to do with your twenty four hours.  It may be tempting to veg out on watching the tube or surfing the net but at the end of the day did it get you closer to building the life you desire?  Don’t get me wrong relaxing and destressing is a way to celebrate your new found free time but consider exploring other methods such as meditation, yoga, hiking or other ways of being outdoors.  These are proven methods of relaxation that add health benefits to you.   If you make these a part of your life now you will develop a pattern of ways to help you to destress when life begins to add so much to your plate both personally and professionally.  Celebrate your time.

#3.  Pursue your profession of passion.  Securing the dream job may not have happened prior to graduation so it is a top priority.  Finding the perfect job or that job that takes you one step closer to your perfect job is a step in the right direction.  Don’t give up.  You did not spend years of your life to wind up in a place that gives you the feeling of “Is this it?”   Taking the time to research and talk to people in your field of study and  surrounding yourself with people that are also on this journey perhaps a school mate can help you to stay focused and to encourage one another.  Being around like-minded people is a key to your success.  In today’s world there are many ways to connect with people that are about the business of following their profession of passion.  Through Facebook groups, Meet-up Groups, Master Mind groups or even starting your own group is a way to stay accountable and focused as you go through this new chapter of your life.  Even if you have secured a job in your profession it is of great worth to you to build a team of people around you that you can connect with.  Successful people will tell you that it is through mentors and relationships that they gained a wealth of resources and connections that was invaluable to them.  Celebrate your new chapter with relationships.

Good Food Will Heal What Ails You

Category : Blog

FacebooktwitterlinkedinFacebooktwitterlinkedin

By Kali Jennifer Patrick with A Journey into Health

One of the ways I work with people as an Eating Psychology Coach is to get them back in touch with how pleasurable food can be. In the Chakras Tune-up workshop this past weekend, we talked about how second (sacral) chakra issues revolve around pleasure, and how the energy in this part of the body is frequently blocked by guilt.

Perfect example: say you eat an amount of chocolate that you don’t think you should have (or something else you find pleasurable but “forbidden”). What might you feel afterwards? Guilt! And sometimes then comes the punishment, like over-exercising, or restricting food (i.e. pleasure) even more. But there was a good reason for the chocolate, wasn’t there? Maybe you can’t point your finger on it initially, but if get quiet for a minute or more, I’ll bet you can find it.

We cannot live without being open to experiencing pleasure. (And this is coming from someone who has had her fair share of pain.) So today when I happened to be in a state of pain (more mental than physical, yet due to physical issues), I got myself to cooking.

It didn’t have to be much, or take a lot of time, but what it had to be was SPECIAL. So I took the extra time I gained today by having to cancel all my “stuff” to cook some oatmeal over the stove (i.e. the old-fashioned way, sans microwave). I combined it with some ghee and vanilla almond milk, and topped with with some shredded almonds and a few prunes. (I happen to really like prunes. ? ) Instead of putting it in a bowl, I picked a nice tea cup, and ate it while nestled under a blanket, propped up on the biggest pile of pillows ever, on the sofa.

IMG_1684Then for lunch, I was reminded of a Facebook post I saw some time ago about cooking scallops in a bit of vermouth with butter. (I believe it was a Paleo recipe.)  My lovely partner was kind enough to get me my standard order of “6 large scallops” from the seafood counter at Central Market yesterday, and we happen to have vermouth and Kerrygold! I also threw in some garlic and ginger for good measure.

Now given what I’m dealing with, let me tell you that there are likely several people who would scoff at the use of the alcohol as well as the dairy. But you know what? I know my body, and I know that when something happens to slow me down, avoiding things I enjoy just means I deprive myself of even more pleasure and don’t heal any faster. So why not enjoy something, when I’m restricted in so many other ways? That’s my philosophy anyway!

When people come to me dealing with an issue about food, food generally isn’t the issue. It’s how they’re approaching life. I never “take away” someone’s treat.  The treat is there for a reason. Sometimes you don’t need it. Sometimes you do. The trick is that when you have the treat, you take the time to enjoy it.

What’s for dinner?

Get Your Passwords For Your Online Presence

FacebooktwitterlinkedinFacebooktwitterlinkedin

By Larissa Davila, owner at BCO Consulting Group

In our current times, online presence is not an option anymore, it is a mandatory necessity of every business or public person. Unfortunately, for those that have hectic schedules or are not very familiar with social media and websites, managing our main source of income and keeping up with online presence can get very overwhelming. In an effort to keep up with technology, strategy and protocol of online presence entrepreneurs sometimes have to outsource this task to third party contractors or even have to hire employees to specifically develop online presence and this is the part when problems can begin. Sometimes third party contractors can get very expensive, or don’t necessarily reflect the personality of the business; some other times, things just go south and the business relationship ends.

At this point business owners rush to hire someone else to take care of their online presence and then realize that the previous provider left with all the passwords and the company is now mute. All the time and money invested is now captive of the previous provider and gaining access to Google, Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the other accounts can be very difficult, sometimes even impossible and creating a second, third or fourth account for the business dilutes the viewer traffic and doesn’t benefit the business. With this being said, my advice to every public person, entrepreneur and business owner is to GET YOUR PASSWORDS AND USER ID’s when things are going smooth with your providers. Take control of your online presence when the relationship is in good terms because after all, it is your business and you are paying for their service, otherwise a lot of headaches can come your way and your business will feel like it is going through a nasty divorce.
